Reporting to the Assistive Technology Team Lead, the role of the Assistive Technology Specialist (AT) includes (but is not limited to): assessing the technology needs of student’s with approved accommodations; providing software and technology training to students requiring assistive technology as an approved accommodation; reviewing strategies for effective use of technology in the classroom; collaborating with publishers and external parties to acquire accessible materials for students; when necessary, creating accessible materials for use with assistive technology devices; maintaining and tracking assistive technology equipment and software; collaborating with Accommodated Learning Support to synthesize academic strategies with technological strategies for the student; ongoing professional development to stay up-to-date with current trends in assistive technology software/hardware and techniques in assistive technology assessment/training; providing a guiding structure for universal design initiatives within the college; and other duties and tasks as required.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provide one-on-one and group support to students accessing Assistive Technology
  • Assess student assistive technology needs in connection with functional impacts
  • Provide training on assistive technology hardware and software to students with disabilities
  • Coordinate the acquisition of accessible materials for students
  • Maintain and track assistive technology equipment
  • Participate in decision making regarding the acquisition of assistive technology equipment
  • Liaise with external and internal stakeholders regarding the purchase, maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of software/hardware
  • Provide consultation to college regarding Universal Design for Learning initiatives
  • Coordinate and collaborate with E&IT department regarding the installation of assistive technology equipment on college computers
  • Communicate and coordinate with Student Support Specialists, Accommodated Exams, Instructional Faculty, Accommodated Learning Support, and other internal stakeholders regarding student accommodations
  • Assist with exam/test supervision, as required
  • Using various computer software programs to format documents to match specification
  • Notifying instructors regarding the uploading of test/exam materials
  • Training students on accessing outside audio material
  • Develop knowledge and skills through participation in courses, workshops, professional development opportunities, interaction with colleagues, and through independent study of current literature
  • Delivering equipment such as rolling chairs and CCTV equipment to classrooms to support students
  • Coordinating with facilities regarding delivery of height adjustable tables    
  • Other duties as assigned as required.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Completion of a related Bachelor’s degree, or a combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience and knowledge regarding the use of assistive technologies is required.
  • 3 – 5 years of related experience supporting individuals with disabilities in a post-secondary environment is required.
  • Ability to prepare and present materials to students, staff and external stakeholders Well developed communication skills (oral, written and listening skills)
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a cohesive team, with time pressures and tight turnaround times
  • Excellent organization and time management skills; must be detail oriented

 

SALARY: $43,015 - $55,910 per annum; commensurate with education and experience related to the position.
