    STUDENT JUDICIAL AFFAIRS OFFICER

    WELLNESS and ACCESSIBILITY

    STUDENT SERVICES

Reporting to the Manager of Wellness and Accessibility, the Student Judicial Affairs Officer collaborates within the Office of Student Judicial Affairs to support consistent interpretation and application of the Student Judicial Affairs Policy, which establishes four related procedures and entrenches “Student Rights and Responsibilities” for the College community. The Student Judicial Affairs Officer is also responsible for fielding general inquiries from students, staff, and faculty seeking information from the OSJA, and coordinating the intake of new cases within the Office of Student Judicial Affairs team.

The Student Judicial Affairs Officer is responsible for the business operations and the day-to-day operation of the Office as well as the Office’s progress through strategic and operational planning. The Student Judicial Affairs Officer regularly advises Program Chairs and Academic Deans on matters of academic integrity, classroom behavior, program regulations, and related pedagogical and procedural topics.

The overall contribution this position makes to the organization is to ensure that students, staff, and faculty are aware of, and are abiding by, Student Judicial Affairs Policy, and to prevent and fairly resolve disagreements of this type. This means that, in addition to overseeing the resolution of each individual file, this position is also responsible for finding opportunities to reduce the likelihood of future complaints by identifying and monitoring emerging trends and themes, and advising on new and existing college and departmental processes that impact student rights and responsibilities.

    • Manage and administer student case files that fall under the jurisdiction of the office
    • Ensure compliance with College’s Student Judicial Affairs Policy and procedures, applying sanctions in academic and non-academic misconduct, and coordinating disciplinary action with relevant offices and personnel
    • Advise students, staff, faculty, and senior administration with respect to their rights and responsibilities under SJA Policy
    • Develop and implement process improvement by seeking internal efficiencies, aligning with best practices at other post-secondary institutions and the College’s strategic direction
    • Provide mediation, conflict coaching, and conflict analysis for the purpose of improving outcomes and preventing further conflict within the College community
    • Coordinate and run OSJA hearing panels: identify cases to go to panel, advise all parties on the process, train student and staff volunteers serving on OSJA hearing panels, draft and communicate decisions of the panel
    • Coordinate and deliver workshops and training
    • Undertake research and analysis for the purposes of building the College’s capacity to prevent and fairly resolve disputes, and to support the development of a culture of academic and non-academic integrity at the College

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master’s Degree
    • Qualified Mediator (or other alternative dispute resolution credential)
    • 5-7 years in progressively more senior administration in a post-secondary setting
    • Experience gathering evidence, analysing results and providing rationale to support findings
    • Working knowledge of best practices in student judicial affairs, campus safety, student services, trauma informed practice, and/or alternative dispute resolution (i.e., mediation, restorative justice)
    • Knowledge of advocacy principles and practices
    • Ability to discuss sensitive or controversial information with discretion and tact with people from all levels of the organization, and from a variety of educational, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
    • Ability to contribute to a team that fosters a cooperative work environment
    • Experience developing and delivering educational programs and/or workshops in a post-secondary setting
